When can I go swimming after breast reduction?
I had a breast reduction two weeks ago, and though I’m not exactly frolicking around, I was curious when I could go swimming. My doctor is on vacation until my next follow-up, and I forgot to ask him at my last one. Thanks!

before my surgery, my friend had asked me if i wanted to go on vacation to the carribean, before i agreed, i asked my doctor if i would be healed enough to go and partake in activities. he said i would be fine. i had a breast reduction at the end of october and for christmas, i went to the cayman islands. while it was still uncomfortable to lift my hands above my head and i couldn’t have swam for a race. i was able to go snorkeling with no problems and dance in the night clubs. i would say wait at least one month. you don’t want any infections.
your doctor may be on vacation, but someone at his office may be able to answer you as well.
Most doctors will tell you to not engage in most activities for 6 weeks post op. Of course depending on how your body is healing. Call your doctor’s office to ask to be safe. Even though he’s on vacation, it is standard practice to have another doctor cover for him.
I typically tell patients when all of their wounds are sealed, it is okay to go in a pool or a tub. For the majority of patients, this is about 3 weeks after surgery. In some cases, if there is delayed healing then it might be a little longer.
