Choosing the Right Breast Surgery for you

Reasons for Breast Surgery

The decision to undergo breast surgery is a distinctly personal one. Many women choose breast augmentation surgery for cosmetic reasons, such as enhancing the contours for a woman who feels that her breasts are too small, creating a balance of symmetry when breasts are different shapes, revitalizing breasts that may have sagged, or restoring the breast shape after the loss of volume after childbirth. In other cases the reasons stem from women wishing to return to their old selves after the loss of a breast from cancer treatments or mastectomies. At the other end of the equation are women who wish to have breast reduction surgery. Women with very large natural breasts may experience chronic back problems due to the weight on their chest, and in some cases the best remedy is breast reduction surgery. This type of breast surgery is not only limited to women. Some men who have excessive breast tissue in their chests choose to have breast reduction surgery in order to flatten their chest.

Managing Expectations for Your Breast Surgery

No matter what your reason is, once you have made that initial decision to undergo breast surgery you still have a number of other important decisions to consider. First and foremost, you need to find a reputable doctor with whom you are very comfortable. This will be the most crucial part of your research process since you will want everything to go perfectly. Speak frankly with your doctor about your expectations to ensure that you both understand what you want and what you hope to achieve from the procedure. Your doctor should give you a thorough explanation of what will occur during your surgery and will inform you on how best to prepare. Understanding breast surgery recovery will make it much easier to take care of yourself and your breasts during the post-operative period.

If you choose to have breast reduction surgery, be sure to tell your doctor about your reasons for having the surgery and inquire about the possibility of your insurance helping you with the expenses. If you are undergoing the surgery for aesthetic reasons, be very clear about the breast shape you hope to achieve once the surgery is over and you have completely healed. In the event that you want breast reduction surgery because you are experiencing back problems, you may want to work with a chiropractor in addition to a plastic surgeon. This can help you achieve a breast size and shape that looks great and helps alleviate back pain.

As with any kind of surgery there are possible complications to be aware of. A common condition is the tightening of the scar and tissue surrounding the implant which makes the breast feel hard. Other problems may include temporary loss or gain of sensation in the nipples and excessive bleeding. These conditions can be managed or fixed with follow up visits. Prior to your breast augmentation surgery discuss these potential problems with your doctor so that you fully understand the risks and what can be done if they occur.

Considering Your Choices for Breast Augmentation

For patients about to undergo breast augmentation surgery there are a number of options to consider. Begin by researching the shape and size of the breasts you would like to have. Some surgeons suggested collecting magazine clippings during your research. This gives the surgeon a starting point for recommending the right type of implant to suit not only your wishes but your body’s anatomy. Breast implants are designed with a solid rubber silicone shell and filled with saline or silicone and are either a round shape or a more natural teardrop shape. The decision for what shape you prefer will then lead to choosing the type of incision your surgeon will use. The three most common incisions are done on the bottom of the breast in the natural crease, around the areola, or in the armpit. The other option is entering through the navel. Your surgeon will advise this decision based on what type of implants and where he feels there will be the least amount of scaring. The implant will be placed either just under the breast tissue or below the chest muscle in a pocket made by your surgeon.

The breast augmentation surgery will take around two hours. Once the breast implants are in place your surgeon will stitch up your incision or use a surgical tape. After your surgery you can expect to be up and moving around in 24 to 48 hours, but you may feel tired and a little tender and have some bruising around the nipple and areola. In about 10 days you can expect the stitches to come out, and in 3 to 5 weeks your swelling will be gone and you can start enjoying the new you.

Choosing the Right Breast Implant

If you’re considering a breast augmentation, you’ve probably read enough to be confused about whether to choose saline implants of silicone gel implants. Your choice of breast implant will depend on your and your doctor’s decisions about what is best for your body. In this article, we’ll compare the different types of implants in use for today’s breast augmentation surgeries.

Saline Implants:
The majority of today’s breast augmentations are done with silicone rubber implants filled with saline. These are currently the only implants available in the US to women who seek cosmetic breast augmentation surgery. Saline implants are either round or teardrop shape. The round implant placed beneath the pectoral muscle or sub pectoral, is perhaps the most commonly utilized combination. The implant is flattened in its upper poles by the overlying muscle producing an appealing breast shape. Rotation of the implant, a potential problem with a teardrop implant is avoided with the round implant beneath the muscle. Teardrop implants are more likely to be utilized when the placement is on top of the muscle beneath the breast tissues or sub glandular. Sub glandular teardrop implants may produce more cleavage as they may be placed a bit closer to the midline, they are less likely to produce unusual breast movements as the pectoral muscles are flexed. Your choice will depend on your idea of the ideal breast shape and your doctor’s preferences.

Saline implants are constructed of a tough outer silicone shell with a saline solution inside. Saline implants also come in either a smooth or a textured variety. Textured saline implants were developed to encourage tissue adherence and to reduce the risk of capsular contracture. Some saline implants also come in an expandable variety in which the saline implant can be enlarged by adding more saline after surgery. The expandable implant allows the overlying tissues to gradually adapt to the new size and is often utilized in breast reconstruction or in cases of marked breast asymmetry. This type of saline breast implant is more expensive than traditional saline implants.

Silicone Gel Implants:
The first implants used in breast augmentation surgery were made of a variety of materials, but in 1964 a silicone rubber envelope filled with a silicone gel implant was utilized and quickly became the standard for breast enlargement. However, silicone gel has not been routinely used in breast augmentations since 1992, when they were banned by the FDA following reports of leakage that was thought to cause tissue diseases. In the years since, many studies have failed to confirm these concerns.

In the years since silicone implants were banned, the cohesive silicone gel implant was developed and is already in use in Europe and Canada and in clinical trials in the US. The difference between silicone gel implants and the original silicone implant is that the gels have a hard, multilayer silicone shell. Inside is a cohesive silicone gel that retains its shape if ruptured because of its consistency.

Saline filled implants may be expected to produce a breast enlargement that is warmer on a cold day, and more likely to demonstrate wrinkles than the silicone gel implants. Gel implants are cooler to the touch but have a consistency that feels much like breast tissue, gel implants are more likely to develop firmness with a constricting fibrous contracture of the scar tissue that forms around the implant . Until the US FDA approves the use of silicone gel implants for breast augmentation, only women who agree to participate in clinical trials can use them.

Your doctor will be an important resource for information and can help you answer any questions that you may have about which type of implant to choose. Once you’ve done your research, asked questions, and found a great doctor, you’re well on your way to enjoying fuller breasts and a more positive self image.

Choosing the Right Breast Implant Size for Your Body

You’ve finally made the decision that you are going to have breast implant surgery done, but now it’s important that you chose the right breast implants size for your body so that you look naturally beautiful.

It’s a common mistake to think it would be great to pack around those triple D’s. However, after the novelty of having those wears of, you are left suffering with a back ache. You discover you can’t find any tops to fit right, and you are tired of everyone talking to your chest instead of you, you wonder “what was I thinking.”

You can see why it’s important to choose a breast implant size that looks and feels natural. The right breast implant size will provide you with the body you’ve always dreamed of. And a good breast implants sizing will help to accomplish the perfect match.

For many women, breast implants have improved the look of the body while boosting self confidence. And when you look great, you feel great, so breast implant surgery is more than just a physical transformation. To have that perfect figure, you need to make sure that the breast implant size you choose isn’t too big.

You might have a good idea about what size breast implants you want, but the best way to determine breast implant size is to schedule a consultation with your plastic surgeon for a breast implant sizing, which involves an evaluation of your body type and size so that the most natural match can be made.

Once you know the right size for you, the next step is deciding on the best type of implant for you. You will need to decide the filling type, shape, and texture.

There are two main filling types – silicone gel and saline. In most cases, the shells of both types are silicone. The biggest difference between the two types is that saline is simply sterile salt water so should a breast rupture with saline the body will simply absorb the solution with no risk to you health. Saline breast implants also require a smaller incision than silicone gel. However, both types are safe and approved by numerous experts and agencies.

Next, you need to choose the shape of your breast. When it comes to shape, women’s breast vary a great deal, so it makes good sense that breast implants would have shape choices to help the breast implants look more natural. The shape option came to be thanks to breast reconstruction where an implant needed to match an existing breast.

Finally, you need to decide if you want textured or smooth implants. Textured implants have a sandpaper type texture and smooth implants are smooth just as the name suggest. With smooth, the breast implant moves unrestricted within the pocket. The most common type is smooth.

Once you know the breast implants size you want, the shape, and the texture, you are ready for your breast implant surgery. You’re going to look and feel like a brand new woman when you’re done.
