“So many times, the attention is focused on the disease and its treatment, so we take this opportunity to look at what survivors need to know about what to expect after they are given a clean bill of health. Most often there is some sort of reconstruction required and that can be difficult, many times the body has changed significantly as a result of the treatment drugs, and emotional and mental challenges can impact the patient as well. We talk with a national recognized breast surgeon about this and more, along with a reconstructive specialist and a patient who brings her first hand experience to the discussion.” CHECK OUT MORE AT WWW.LYNNDOYLE.NET FOLLOW LYNN ON TWITTER @LYNNDOYLETV FOLLOW IT’S YOUR CALL @ITSYOURCALLSHOW

This animation visualises research published in Nature Medicine (Vol 15, Issue 8, 2009) by the laboratory of Jane Visvader and Geoffrey Lindeman. The mammary gland is comprised of three main cell types; alveolar, ductal and myoepithelial cells. Stem cells can develop into any of the three cell types through a series of intermediate cell stages. One intermediate is the luminal progenitor cell, which develops into either alveolar or ductal cells. The paper describes how an aberrant form of a luminal progenitor cell is involved in the development of some forms of breast cancer. See our other animation, Breast Stem Cells, for a more detailed explanation of stem cell function.

Bill Rancic appeared on the Today show this morning where he announced that his wife underwent a double lumpectomy. “We went into the surgery [which] lasted about two hours,” Bill said. “She’s a trooper. She pulled through it and was kind of relieved to get it over with and get the cancer out. She’s doing well at home and recovering.” The good news is that things are looking good for Giuliana as she has a chance of recovery.
