Breast augmentation is now the most popular cosmetic surgery procedure in the U.S. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgery, 329,000 women had breast augmentation in 2006, which is up from 291,000 in 2005, when it was the third most popular cosmetic surgery. Considering the emphasis which is placed on large breasts by entertainment industry, this is not surprising.
But there are drawbacks to having large breasts. They may draw unwanted attention from men and envy from other women. They give you more weight to carry around, probably requiring extra support during vigorous activity. You may be unable to sleep on your stomach. You may feel hotter during warm weather, and experience more sweating.
On the other hand, if you feel that your breasts are too small, you may feel uncomfortable wearing a swimsuit, you might wear a padded bra to make them look larger and to make clothing fit better, and you might be living daily with a sense of being inferior as a female.
But size is not the only important thing about breasts. Your overall proportions might or might not call for large breasts. There is the issue of how high the breasts are – whether they sag or not. Sometimes after pregnancy and breastfeeding there is a loss of volume in the upper breast area. For some women, a breast lift might be a better option than breast augmentation.
What breast augmentation will do
· Your cosmetic surgeon would make an incision (in the armpit, beneath the breast, or around the nipple) and insert the implant.
· It can be placed beneath the breast tissue but over the chest muscle, or beneath both.
· You can have it be teardrop-shaped or round.
· It can be filled with saline solution or silicone gel.
· It can of course be any of a number of sizes.
A breast implant will have the effect of lifting the breasts as well as enlarging them. You will probably lose some sense of touch in the nipples, especially if the implant is large. Your silhouette will be transformed and you will need a new wardrobe. Breast augmentation can be combined with a breast lift.
What a breast lift will do
Because of age, the force of gravity, pregnancy and breastfeeding, breasts gradually droop, a condition known as ptosis. They may also lose volume. A breast lift can change the droop and raise the breasts higher on the chest, but does not change their size. However, when they are positioned higher, and the nipples are higher on them, they usually appear to be bigger.
When breasts sag, the skin becomes stretched, which in turn, allows the breasts to sag more, stretching the skin more. A breast lift will remove unwanted skin. The remaining skin will then be tighter, holding the breasts up more firmly. The breast lift can also reduce the size of the areola (darkened area around the nipple), which also gives a more youthful look.
Combining breast implants and breast lift
If your breasts are just mildly droopy, a breast implant will probably be enough to perk them up. If they droop too much, however, an implant will increase their size but not raise their position. This is an issue best discussed with your cosmetic surgeon, as each case is individual. Breast augmentation and breast lift can be done separately or at the same time.
